Rakim Discusses His 1st Album, Writing Process and more
Rakim recently sat down for a live edition of The Touré Show, and in this clip he explains what it was like recording “Eric B for President” in Marley Marl’s house when he was just 17.
He revealed that it was a nerve-racking process because he respected them so much, but he wanted Rakim to be more “amped up” when he rapped. After the song’s success, Marley Marl admitting to Rakim that he understood what he was going for when they recorded the track. In this clip, Rakim broke down his writing process. Being regarded as one of, if not the greatest MC of all time, Rakim revealed some of the difficulties he runs into while writing. He spoke about the inability to turn his ideas off, and how being his own harshest critic can sometimes be detrimental.
On the flip side, Rakim talked about meditating as a way to conjure up inspiration and says it allows him to tap into the ‘higher source’ through which his gift of writing originates.
